About: Rose is a multimedia performance that tells a story of a childhood search for identity, queerness, and acceptance through the bizzare lens of fetal cannibalism. Jarboe, known as the founding artistic director of the Bearded Ladies Cabaret, employs original songs played by a live band, intimate storytelling, and lush films to transport the audience into her youth, the womb (a.k.a the scene of the crime), and the fantasy world of a young trans person growing up in the midwest. The audience is guided, cast, and asked to sing-a-long on this fantastical gender journey that is told with heart, acerbic wit, idiosyncrasy, and, ultimately, acceptance.

Production History: Rose was developed through a bubble residency at Mount Tremper Arts in Fall 2020 and subsequently at Bethany Arts Community in Spring 2021. Rose premiered in Spring 2022 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Rose began as a commission and presentation from Works & Process at the Guggenheim through a bubble residency at Mount Tremper Arts in Fall 2020 and at Bethany Arts Community in Spring 2021. Rose received additional production support from the Bearded Ladies Cabaret and FringeArts as well as the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
